Sanchismo

Political doctrine associated with Pedro Sánchez: tactical pragmatism, ability to pact with all parliamentary groups, and resistance to wear and tear. Received as praise by his circle and as an insult by his opponents.

Second Republic

Democratic regime in Spain between 14 April 1931 and 1 April 1939. It enacted the 1931 republican Constitution (women's suffrage, Church-State separation), went through three phases (Reformist Biennium, Black Biennium, Popular Front) and ended with the 18 July 1936 coup and the Civil War.

Separatism

Pejorative synonym of independentism, popularized by the Spanish right and especially by Vox. Those targeted prefer 'independentism' or 'sovereigntism'.

Sovereigntism

Claim of a people's right to decide on its form of state, usually via referendum. In Catalonia a forerunner of independentism; in the Basque Country, the traditional position of the PNV.

PP off-the-books salaries

Cash payments documented in the Bárcenas papers to PP officials between 1990 and 2008. Established as proven facts in the 2018 Gürtel ruling.

Sociovergente

Historical label that referred to the convergence between the PSC and CiU (Convergència) during Jordi Pujol's Catalan governments (1980-2003), reflected in occasional pacts and business networks.

Exit poll

Survey conducted of voters as they leave the polling station, used to estimate results before the count. Television networks rely on it to open election night with projections.

Spexit

Hypothetical exit of Spain from the European Union, popularized on social media during the negotiation of contentious pacts. No party with parliamentary representation formally defends it.

Spin doctor

Political communications adviser specialized in shaping the media narrative in favour of a leader. Iván Redondo at Moncloa (2018-2021) and Pedro Arriola with Aznar are examples of the trade in Spain.
