National-Catholicism

Ideological doctrine of Francoism that fused traditionalist Spanish nationalism with Catholicism as the state religion. It imprinted a confessional stamp on education, customs and legislation for 40 years.

Nationalism

Ideology that defends the political rights of a nation, usually with a will for self-government. In Spain Spanish nationalism (PP, Vox) coexists with peripheral Catalan, Basque and Galician nationalisms.

Nazism

Totalitarian ideology of Hitler's German regime (1933-1945), implemented by the NSDAP (National Socialist German Workers' Party) and based on racism, antisemitism, expansionism and single-party rule. Despite carrying 'socialist' in its name, the regime banned and persecuted the social-democratic SPD and the communist party. Allied with Francoism during the Civil War; the term is used today in political debate as an extreme insult.

Pact negotiation

Process of political agreements to build governing majorities or pass laws. After 2015, negotiation has been the new normal due to the fragmentation of Congress.

Neoliberalism

Economic doctrine defending the primacy of the market, the reduction of the state's weight and liberalization. A critical label that the left applies to the policies of PP, Ciudadanos and, in part, Felipe González's PSOE.

Election night

The day on which results are released after polling stations close. It includes exit polls, provisional vote count and statements by leaders; the official count comes days later.

Nóos case

Scheme of irregular contract awards to the Nóos Institute, chaired by Iñaki Urdangarin. Final convictions in 2018 against Urdangarin and other directors; acquittal of Princess Cristina on the tax-fraud charge.

New right

Label for conservative movements reformulated since the 1980s, combining economic neoliberalism with traditional values. In Spain it is reflected in Vox and, in part, in sectors of Feijóo's PP.
