Judicialization of politics
Tendency to take political conflicts to the courts rather than resolving them in parliament. A recurring criticism of major Constitutional Court and Supreme Court rulings.
Junteros
Informal nickname for the seven independent members of the General Council of the Judiciary appointed by judicial associations. The negotiation over their selection was central to the CGPJ deadlock between 2018 and 2024.
Oath or pledge of the Constitution
Formal act through which MPs, senators and senior officials take office. The wording and any added phrases ('por imperativo legal', 'hasta la república') are a frequent source of political controversy.
Trial by jury (Spain)
Court made up of nine lay citizens that decides guilt in cases such as murder, breaking and entering, failure to assist or crimes by public officials. Regulated by Organic Law 5/1995.
Investigating court
Judicial body in charge of investigating crimes before the trial. Famous for the concentration of high-profile cases in courts such as Madrid's Court 41 (Begoña Gómez) or Court 7 of the National Court.
